Journal / 4:30 a.m and just finishing work for the night

4:30 a.m and just finishing work for the night. i guess that’s one of the downsides of working for yourself: the hours can suck.

tonight i was working on: 1-a stripped down, minimal acoustic version of ‘beautiful’ (i don’t think it’s very good, to be honest) 2-a big orchestral song that doesn’t have a name 3-a slow, sad romantic song about ending a relationship in france while it’s raining (not the most original subject matter, i’ll admit) and tonight was the grammy’s.

i didn’t watch, as, to be honest, i just wasn’t interested. i have nothing against the world of mainstream pop music, it’s just that: a-i have no interest in it b-i don’t listen to it and c-the priorities of the mainstream pop world don’t reflect anything that i personally care about when it comes to music. i hope this doesn’t sound too cynical or critical, but it just seems as if mainstream pop music has completely divested itself of any sincerity or real emotion whatsoever. it’s all so manufactured and calculated, which i guess is entertaining, but ultimately when music is manufactured to such an extent it just leaves me cold (even if its fun to dance to at weddings).

to think that at one point the charts were comprised of john lennon and nirvana and simon and garfunkel and the clash and neil young and marvin gaye and other artists who wrote their own songs and were utterly and passionately committed to making music that was sincere and powerful. and now manufactured product reigns supreme. ah well, at least the smaller indie world is thriving (even if it wasn’t represented at the grammy’s in any capacity, which is probably a good thing, actually). people on indie labels are making great records and great music. it’s just that the old music business seems more comfortable with artists and records that are over-produced and auto-tuned and manufactured to within an inch of their lives. like i said, i just don’t pay attention to pop music these days, as it means nothing to me. if bon iver plays at the grammy’s next year on his own maybe i’ll watch. otherwise i’d rather spend the night by myself in my studio.
