boardies

you know, the nature of the moby.com boards is such that it's very difficult to ban people or keep them from posting.
if we ban someone they'll just come back with a different name.
so here's what i suggest:
a-try to keep things civil. if someone does something egregiously offensive try not to respond with vitriol or outrage, just ignore them or respond with polite indifference.
b-if someone gets really out of hand or tries to provoke you just ignore them(oops, i just realized that 'a' and 'b' are kind of the same suggestions).

so that's what i recommend, if someone bothers you just respond with polite indifference and/or ignore them.
some people come to the moby.com boards just to generate drama and hostility.
if you don't give them drama or hostility they'll either go away or learn how to play nice with others.

new york is great.

i'm a proud new yorker.
i love my city. the place of my birth. where i live.
i'll tell you about my day today and you'll see why i love new york so much.
i went for a walk with a friend of mine.
it was about 200 degrees outside, but we decided to go for a long walk to the east river
park(one of manhattan's hidden jewels). en route we were flagged down by a priest at a russian orthodox church who invited us inside and gave us a tour of his church while introducing us to a 20 year old cat and also showing us some of the icons that the church/school had produced.
then we continued walking and ended up in east river park where we watched a latino little-league game.
then we walked back through housing projects and bought water in an arabic deli(they smiled appreciatively at my t-shirt, which says 'war is shit' in arabic).
we made our way past old jewish couples and beautiful old synagogues then walked through chinatown and then stopped in a park on rivington and chrystie where:
latino families were playing checkers
a pakistani family was playing frisbee
an indian family was playing on the swings
a woman in a burka was pushing her kids on the swings
yuppies were playing in the fountain
and african-americans were playing on the playground.
so, you see one of the reasons why i love my city?
in the course of an hour we encountered:
russian(and georgian)orthodox, latinos, arabs, jews, indians, chinese, pakistanis, african-americans, and caucasoids(aka me and my yuppie hordes).
everyone was out having barbecues and playing frisbee and playing in fountains and walking around and enjoying the day and enjoying their families.
everyone was getting along, even though some of these people represent cultures who have centuries of enmity with one another.
every country on the planet is represented in new york city, and for the most part everyone treats each other with respect and decency.
indians and pakistanis live next to each other and get along.
jews and arabs live next to each other and get along.
gays and fundamentalists live next to each other and get along.
koreans and japanese live next to each other and get along.
people might not actively preach tolerance, but they practice tolerance, even when it's
difficult and challenging. and that's remarkable.
i not only love new york city, but i'm proud of the city of my birth and i feel fortunate and honored to be able to call this place my home.
thanks.

damn

damn it's hot.
that's all.
-moby

p.s-maybe that really is all. whoo-boy, it's hot. hotter than a, well, um, a hot
day in new york city? no. hotter than an overcooked piece of seitan in a wok full
of boiling peanut oil? ok, not quite that hot.
but hot.
our good friend mr weather does seem to be broken, huh.
it's going to be really interesting when hurricane season starts this year.
a friend of mine was in maine(quite close to the arctic circle, just fyi)recently
and said that the ocean water was very, very warm(which, apparently, it rarely
is up there).
when/if the hurricances start happening this year they're going to be nasty.
i can just hear it now, our kids/grandkids talking:
'wow, granddad, so people used to live on the east coast near the sea?'
don't you wish i was writing about politics?
aren't i more fun when i write about politics?
ok, politics: the world is a mess and you just know that dick cheney has a hard on for invading iran and syria.
you just know that when he's home and enjoying his onanistic companionship he thinks about air strikes on damascus and tehran in order to help things along, if you know what i'm sayin'.
but enough about politics for now.
a friend of mine just sent me a picture of her monkey.
that must be pretty great, to live with a monkey.
-moby

no politics here! just music & randomness

if i mention that i'm not going to write about politics today does that still somehow make this a political blog?
kind of like an alcoholic holding tequila in his mouth but not actually swallowing it?
i went to see the new woody allen movie tonight, 'scoop'.
it's cute. it's basically a scarlett and woody buddy movie.
my theory is that they had fun making 'match point' and just wanted to hang out some more so they made 'scoop'.
as i said, it's a cute movie. not one of his best, but far from one of his worst.
and the rapport that he and scarlett have is very endearing, it's clear that they really like each other and just want to hang out and tell jokes.
am i dull when i'm not writing about politics?
oh, here's a random tangent:
i was recently given a copy of aesop's fables, as re-published by the ny public library, i believe.
and it's great.
the medici aesop, i think it's called.
the wisdom in aesops fables is actually quite remarkable. really. go look at some of aesop's fables and you'll see what i mean.
they're not dark like grimm's fairy tales(which i love).
and they're not friendly like hans christian andersen's tales(which are nice).
but they're remarkably wise and relevant.
ok, time to watch the daily show and then go to sleep.
one last thing: i don't know if i've mentioned this, but in the autumn(late october?)we're going to be releasing a 'moby's greatest hits' cd.
at present it looks as if it's going to be called 'go. the very best of moby'.
i'm still not 100% sure which songs are going to be on the cd, but i'll decide soon(being the decider. wait, are you sure that gw bush didn't mean to say that he's the deicider? oops, politics).
they'll be lots of bonus stuff available with the greatest hits/best of, if you want it.
not sure what, but fun things, hopefully.

democrats and the middle class

argh.
ok, another update about politics.
i just read that the democrats are hoping to push a 'middle class agenda' to help
them win in 2006.
woo hoo, that sure is sexy...
don't we all know that it's everyone's life-long dream in the united states
to be middle class or working poor?
ok, i'm being facetious.
this might be what killed john kerry's bid for the presidency.
when affluent, privileged democrats talk about 'middle class values' the voters think:
a-um, what do you know about middle class values?
and
b-who wants to be middle class? we want to be rich.

polls in the united states show that almost no one identifies themselves as middle class, and even fewer people actually want to be middle class.
people want to be rich and successful, however they might define that for themselves.
a better democratic rallying cry might be: 'vote for us and you'll all get rich!'
the democrats really suck at understanding and promoting sexy and compelling messages.
many people perceive democrats as the party of unsexy averageness.
sort of a 'well, i guess the democrats are ok, they're pretty good at governing and they're less corrupt than the republicans...i'll vote for them, but they're so boring.'
bill clinton was successful because he wasn't boring.
jfk was successful because he wasn't boring.
the democrats need to learn how to be sexy and exciting, and unfortunately promoting 'middle class values' is not particularly sexy and exciting, even if said values are worthy of being promoted.
you don't sell a car because it has well made tires, you sell a car because it goes fast and takes you to interesting places.
-moby

one more about politics...

ok, one more political update...
i've had an email exchange with one of the conservative republicans who occasionally
reads my updates.
my experience is that when people communicate directly and not anonymously that they tend to be much more civil and respectful towards one another.
here is my response to his email.
-moby

hi,
i guess that my biggest problems with the current crop of right wing republicans are their logical/ethical inconsistencies, and their inability to own up to problems created by their hubris and ineptitude.

some examples.
a-a culture of life. great idea. for republicans shouldn't this then be a guiding principle that would protect the rights of the unborn but also look after the born? i.e-providing health care/day care to children once they're born. providing contraception to prevent unwanted pregnancies/children. protecting the environment so that children are not made sick from pollution, etc. promoting legislation that protects children from corporations who knowingly produce and promote products that are harmful.
and then war...if the republicans believe in a 'culture of life' shouldn't that potentially stay their hand from killing innocent civilians overseas? close to 100,000 dead iraqi civilians since the war began?
it just seems depressingly inconsistent to say 'we believe in a culture of life' and then do nothing to help/protect people once they're actually born.

b-the war. the war is a disaster. and it was started out of neo-con hubris and deceit. iraq had no wmd's. the inspectors knew this. the cia knew this.
even the administration knew this.
so now we're stuck in a bloody and expensive quagmire while countries that do have wmd's test them and flaunt them in our faces.
that's just bad foreign policy, and i have yet to see anyone responsible step up and say 'we've made a huge mistake, we're sorry, and we need to come together to try to fix this huge mistake.'
the last time that saddam hussein committed genocide against his people was in the 80's, when he was an ally of the reagan/bush administrations.
by the early 21st century he had become a largely toothless despotic figurehead, without weapons of mass destruction, and with no ties to al qaeda.

c-stem cell research. the embryo's that could be used to harvest stem cells will, about 99% of the time, be thrown away.
i don't need to point out the absurdity of this, do i?
who benefits from discarded embryo's?
how is throwing embryo's in the garbage protecting or promoting a culture of life?

as an aside, one of the big differences between liberal disdain for conservatives and conservative disdain for liberals is that liberal disdain for conservatives tends to be issue oriented and conservative disdain for liberals tends to be jingoistic.
when liberals complain about conservatives it's usually focussed on things that conservatives have done while in power.
when conservatives complain about liberals it's usually(based on listening to rush limbaugh and bill o'reilly, etc)focussed on jingoistic slogans('they hate life', 'they love saddam hussein', etc)that have nothing to do with any of the serious issues with which we're confronted.

i stand by my earlier statement that a man who:
a- starts a war based on deceit and ends up killing hundreds of thousands of innocent civilians
b-sends soldiers into harms way without adequate armor and strategy
c-promotes fiscal policies that subsidize the wealthy and harm the poor
d-promotes environmental policies that decimate gods creation

is quite possibly evil, especially if he does these things in christ's name.
i've read the new testament many times, i don't remember christ compelling his followers to lie, kill innocent civilians, befoul gods creation, and favor the rich over the poor.
christ never mentioned homosexuality or protecting the family.
he did, however, repeatedly compel his followers to look after the poor and practice forgiveness and non-violence.

in lieu of politics: punk rock reminiscing.

ok, time to take a break from politics.
i know, i can get a bit long winded when it comes to my political blogs.
i use the word 'blog' but i still hate it.
can't we come up with a better word?
'journal'? 'update'? something?
blog just sounds like a clogged toilet.
so rather than write about politics i thought i'd write about punk rock.
or, to be specific, the 3rd time i saw black flag(i think i ended up seeing about
20 black flag shows in the early to mid 80's, actually).
it was 1952(actually it was 1983...still a long time ago)and i believe it was a thursday night.
black flag were playing in new rochelle, new york(i don't remember the name of the club)and i really wanted to go, even though the next day was a school day.
none of my punk rock friends were willing to go with me, so i borrowed my mom's car and took i-95 to the aforementioned nameless club in new rochelle.
here's where my memory gets hazy...were adrenalin o.d on the bill as well?
i'm not sure. i liked a.o.d. we had a barbecue with them at jeff cud's house in bridgeport.
ah yes, i remember it well.
so i went to new rochelle by myself(feeling very adult, i might add)and staked out my place at the front of the stage. 10pm rolls around and black flag come onstage.
the line-up was, i believe: gregg ginn on guitar, robo on drums, dez cadena on guitar, chuck dukowski on bass, and henry rollins on vocals.
and they were spectacular(thus my seeing them 20 or so times in the early 80's).
so insanely loud and aggressive and perfect. this primal, guttural, raw noise.
a lot of the hardcore bands in the early 80's were really tight(minor threat, for example, who i also loved). but black flag were messy. orchestrated, but messy, owing more to the stooges, say, than to the clash(an aside: i love the stooges and the clash, not criticizing tight or messy, they're just different).
so black flag just made this sound. this big, all encompassing sound that pulled you in and made your head feel like it was going to explode, david cronenburg-style.
and, as i was a 15 or 16 year old punk rock kid, i did my fair share of stage diving.
this was before the scene had become really violent. if you fell down you got picked up.
if you wanted to get on stage the band would give you a hand up and pull you onto the stage. it was a very communal, friendly, scene, even if everyone was beating the shit out of each other. we were beating the shit out of each other with love...ha ha. but it's true.
so on my 5th or 6th stage diving trip i decided to really, really launch myself off of the stage. which i did. but, uh, i kind of launched myself a bit too far and went over the phalanx of kids at the front of the stage and landed on my head in the pit.
if you've ever fallen 8 or 9 feet onto your head you might know the very odd feeling that i hope to never experience again. the feeling of 'ow. that really hurts. and...have i really hurt myself? oh boy. i hope i'm ok.'
so i took myself off to the side of the club and did a little mental check of my well being.
a-i'm standing and walking around: check.
b-i can turn my head: check.
c-i can see and hear and smell: check.
well, then, i guess i'm ok.
and, being a resilient 15 or 16 year old, i immediately jumped back into the pit and reclaimed my space at the front of the stage just in time to hear 'rise above'(which i guess has some magical restorative health giving properties that i had heretofore been unaware of).
i guess i'm glad that i'm still here. or, rather, that i'm still here and still able to walk around and turn my head and taste and smell and occasionally jump up and down.
maybe some other time i'll tell you about how i got the scar on my face while dancing to a black flag song.
it's not such a sexy story, as it involved dancing to black flag record at an all ages club long after black flag had broken up.
ok, that's my punk rock reminiscence for today.

right wing criticism of my blog

i've noticed that right wing republicans will oftentimes comment on my blog or will post on the moby.com message boards.
this is great, i love to hear peoples opinions.
but i can't help but notice that these same right wing republicans usually refrain from actually stating what they actually believe in.
they are quite loud and vitriolic when it comes to criticizing me, which is fine.
i have no problem being criticized, it's part of a healthy dialectic.
but i don't know what these right wing republicans believe in.
small government?
responsible foreign policy?
responsible fiscal policy?
transparent governing?
the sanctity of life?
the protection of the family?

ok, just to remind our right wing friends:
the current republicans have created the largest federal government in the history of the united states, their foreign policy has alienated all of our allies and resulted in a war that degenerates daily and costs 1 billion dollars a week, they've created the largest federal deficit in the history of the united states, they've had the least transparent administration of the 20th century, their actions have resulted in hundreds of thousands of deaths, and they've raised taxes on middle income families while cutting health care and education funding.
so, what do you right wing republicans actually believe in?
and do you really feel that your beliefs are in any way represented or promoted by this current administration?
i've been writing about politics a bit too much lately, so after this one last political entry i'll try to write about something other than politics for a while.

daily show and evil

i, like most reasonable americans, watch the daily show as often as possible.
it's without question the smartest, funniest, and most germaine show on television.
and normally it's very light hearted, regardless of the subject matter.
but today they talked about bush's veto of providing federal funds for stem cell research, and they contrasted his anti-stem cell research speech wherein he said, basically, 'every individual human life is sacred' with his speech of a few weeks ago where he said, 'i dunno, somewhere around 30,000 iraqi citizens were killed in the beginning of the iraqi war'.
john stewart had a look in his eye that was less bemused irony, and more baffled outrage.
gw bush is our president? every human life is sacred, but 'around 30,000 iraqi civilians were killed during the beginning of the iraqi war'?
i'm sorry, i know that i oftentimes rant about what an idiot gw bush is, but now i actually believe that he's evil.
let's look at some evidence:
a-he's responsible for the deaths of hundreds of thousands of innocent civilians.
b-he's cut health care funding for the poor, while cutting taxes for the richest americans.
c-he's heavily federally subsidised industries which are actively destroying the planet on which we live.
d-he's put u.s soldiers in harms way without providing them adequate armor, an adequate plan, or even an understanding of why they're overseas.
e-and now he's used his first veto to block federal funding for scientific research(stem cell research)that could actually save millions of lives.

sorry, i know it's not our place to judge, but president bush seems to be one of the most dangerous incarnations of evil on the planet.
i could be wrong. i'd like to be wrong.
and i know that some people will think that i'm just indulging in hyperbole.
but look at the evidence i've listed above.
or dig deeper and look at his record as governor(more executions than any other governor in the latter half of the 20th century). and look at the other despicable things he's done in office.
he's not passively allowing evil to occur, he's actively promoting and creating evil at home and abroad.
his veto of stem cell research really has convinced me.
he'd rather see embryo's thrown in the trash than used for scientific research that could help millions of people.
at this point i believe that it's our moral imperative to do all that we can to elect a democratic house and senate in november to somehow try and block what is seemingly the administration of a man who is doing evil works.
and he may call himself a christian, but i don't remember anywhere in the new testament where christ calls upon his followers to kill hundreds of thousands of innocent people, take resources from the poor and give them to the rich, and actively destroy the planet on which we live.
i wish i were indulging in hyperbole, i really do. but all the evidence seems to point to the fact that george bush is not just dangerous and inept, but actively evil.
-moby

u.s.a.

i just wanted to take a minute to recap some of the ways in which president bush and the extreme right are ruining the united states, ok?
ok, good, here goes:

1-the war. iraq is degenerating into civil war. 14,000 iraqi civilians have been
killed in 2006 alone. the u.s is spending one billion dollars a week to keep our
troops there. and no progress is being made whatsoever. it's the biggest foreign policy disaster in the history of the united states. and while we're stuck in iraq, north korea
and iran are developing long range nuclear weapons. and because we're stuck in iraq we don't have the money or military strength to provide any sort of significant deterrent to north korea and iran.
we invaded a country with no weapons of mass destruction while we ignored the countries that actually have weapons of mass destruction.

2-stem cell research. most scientists believe that stem cell research has the potential to
cure or better understand hundreds of pernicious diseases. the senate today passed a bill in support of stem cell research. president bush has promised to veto it.
stem cells and the embryo's from which they're derived will be thrown into the garbage if they're not used for research. but president bush feels that it's more important to protect the rights of garbage bound embryo's than to the rights of real people.

3-alternative energy. we are, at present, paying more for energy than at any time in the last 100 years. and our oil and natural gas tends to come from countries run by despotic regimes with ties to terrorism and human rights abuse. the bush administration are doing nothing to develop alternative energy sources, in fact they're giving hundreds of billions of dollars in subsidies and tax breaks to the oil companies who are at present all making record profits.

4-with iraq degenerating into civil war, north korea testing long range ballistic missiles, iran developing nuclear weapons, israel at war with lebanon, gas prices at an all time high, etc, what are the republicans spending their time on? trying to pass legislation banning gay marriage and flag burning. oh, and giving themselves pay increases.

we are being ruled by dangerous, inept, idiots. my only hope is that the mid-term elections will re-introduce some sanity into the house and senate, and thus check the dangerous ineptitude of the bush administration.

middle east and animal rights

what to write, what to write...
do i write about the unfolding disaster in the middle east?
what can i write?
that there's an unfolding disaster in the middle east?
that the simmering pot that is the middle east is now boiling over and everyone's going to get burned?
that it's a dreadful situation that is hurting a lot of innocent people on all sides?
it's tragic and depressing and i'm at a loss as to what to write.
which leads me to write about cows.
this weekend i went upstate to the woodstock farm animal sanctuary and spent the night and hung out with cows and goats and chickens and turkeys and sheep and pigs and cats and dogs(and people, too, although the weekend was more about quadripeds than bipeds...
although the bipedal creatures were nice, too).
a farm animal sanctuary is a place where farm animals go to live out their lives free from the threat of being killed or tortured or made to suffer at the hands of people.
the animals do what they like to do, which, in the case of cows, is to run around in a field eating grass and playing with each other. or, in the case of pigs, is to sleep a lot and eat a lot of melons. or, in the case of goats, is to eat a lot of hay and grass and rub their bellies on mounds of dirt and play with people and each other. or, in the case of the 3 turkeys, is to wander around the yard like elder statesmen, following whoever happens to be walking around. or, in the case of chickens, is to, well, be chickens. or, in the case of sheep, is to hang out with the other sheep quite far away from everyone else.
it had been years since i had been able to hang out with animals who were not people/dogs/cats/pigeons/rats.
and, to be a bit of a vegan animal rights evangelist, i don't know how anyone could look at a happy 6 month old cow or pig and say 'this is food, let's kill it.'.
these are sentient creatures, full of life and full of emotion and full of a desire to be happy and alive.
if you're going to eat meat i ask you to do this: go visit a small farm or farm sanctuary and spend some time with the animals before you eat them.
if you can look a 6 month old cow in the eye and scratch it's ears and watch it run across the field with the other cows and still say 'there goes my food', well, then i don't know what to say.
these animals are happy when they're doing what they want to do. they're happy playing with each other. they're happy eating apples and grapes and melons. they're happy sleeping in the field next to each other. they're happy being alive and leading lives free of pain and suffering.
10 billion animals will be killed this year for human consumption, and the vast majority of those 10,000,000,000 animals will lead tragic, tortured lives before they're killed.
it's all unnecessary and unspeakably sad.
please, if you're going to eat meat at least go visit a small farm and look into the eyes of the creatures you plan on eating. watch them sleep next to each other.
watch them play with each other. watch them eat apples out of your hand.
they are smart, sentient creatures, and you owe them that much.
thank you.

gay marriage

ok, gay marriage.
there was a flurry of activity last year where a lot of local legislatures made same sex marriage legal.
now the courts and the conservatives are trying to roll things back and define marriage as a union between a man and a woman.
here are my small thoughts:

a-if the conservatives are protecting the 'sanctity of marriage' shouldn't they focus their efforts on trying to prevent divorce? seems like people trying to get out of marriages might be a bigger threat to marriage than people trying to gain the right to get married.

b-what would happen if a man and a woman got married and then the woman(or man)got a sex change? would they still be married? what if the woman got a sex change and then the man got a sex change?
so the woman was a man then the man a woman? how does the law cover this?

c-what if there was a religion that compelled same sex marriages? wouldn't a ban on same sex marriage then be a constitutional issue as it would be a restriction on peoples freedom to practice religion as they so chose?

ok, i'm going upstate now to look at cows.
have a good weekend.

moby.com boards, etc

hi,
as you know, the moby.com boards is a 99.9% open forum.
you are free to write whatever you want, although we might draw the line at posts that are racist, misogynistic, or overtly violent.
some people want to write about sex, etc, which is fine.
all that i ask is that you make an effort to keep sexual posts in topics that are identified as being sexual.
some people are troubled by overtly risque or sexual material, and i think that we should try to respect their concerns.
i'm not saying that you should limit what you write, but it would be respectful to identify the subject/topic so that people can avoid salacious material if they so choose.
im not in any way trying to restrict or limit people's ability to express themselves on the moby.com boards, i'm just trying to respect all of the people who choose to spend time there.
thanks

teeth.

have i ever told you about my teeth?
i know, it's a fascinating subject.
to begin: i have terrible teeth.
they hate me and i hate them.
here's a brief history of my long life of dental trauma:
1-as a child i had cavities in most of my baby teeth.
2-then the adult teeth came in and more cavities ensued(i've had cavities/fillings in 90% of my teeth).
3-then it was time for braces. although before braces the dentists decided that i needed fewer teeth. so they pulled 5 teeth. oh, did i mention that they were only supposed to pull 4? yes. they pulled a wrong tooth and then put it back into it's bloody hole to see if it would 're-grow'. it didn't, so after 3 days they re-pulled it.
4-braces: 2 years of braces, 2 years of a retainer.
5-wisdom teeth. 4 wisdom teeth pulled at once.
6-more cavities, and then old fillings started falling out and needing to be replaced.
7-root canal 1...it was begun in nyc. then i had a flight to germany and the root canal became infected. very quickly infected. i've never experienced such intense pain in my entire life. on an airplane. over the atlantic. what do you do? nothing.
moan. whimper. hit self in head with shoe. got to germany and was whisked to the emergency room where they continued the root canal.
crown from said root canal has fallen off 2 times.
8-then a few months ago i went to get a routine cavity-replacement. they ground the tooth down and exposed the nerve. oh, that's fun. have you ever had a 400 degree ice pick jammed into your face? that's kind of what it feels like.
so, another root canal. another crown.
and this crown fell off and i had it reattached but they did it wrong and now i get to go back to the dentist again today and have it re-re-attached.

when/if they invent a robot who can painlessly remove all of my teeth and replace them with cyborg robot teeth i will be a happier man.

so, to recap:

90% of my teeth have fillings i've had 9 teeth pulled 2 root canals, both of which had complications

i guess i should stop stuffing my face with candy bars before i go to sleep...
i kid. i actually just swish with a mixture of coca-cola and gravel before i go to bed.
maybe in other 'blogs'(i hate that word) i'll describe, in detail, some of my other genetic failings.

new moby.com boards

so, thanks for your patience, and now the new moby.com boards are up and running.
i know that some people might have some issues with the new boards, but my hope is that you'll soon realize that there a lot better than the old boards in terms of functionality and security.
they're new, and they might take some getting used to.
thanks again, and i hope that you enjoy the new boards.

2 new demo songs

i put 2 more unreleased songs up on my myspace home page.
one is a punk rock demo that i recorded with daron murphy and scott frassetto a few months ago, and the other is an odd little piece of music called 'staring' that i recorded but never released while i was working on the album '18'.
at least i don't think i ever released it.
thanks,

soldiers funerals

on july 4th president bush did an interview for 'stars and stripes' magazine.
when asked if he had ever attended a funeral for a soldier killed in iraq his
honest and candid answer was 'no'.
i need to editorialize, his answer is honest, candid, and sad.
he started a war based on lies.
thousands of troops have been killed.
and he can't bring himself to attend even one soldiers funeral.
i see lots of people with 'support the troops' posters and bumper stickers.
