WASHINGTON — Bob Dylan. Yo-Yo Ma. Sheryl Crow. Jay-Z. These aren't musical acts in a summer concert series: They're artists featured on Barack Obama's iPod.
"I have pretty eclectic tastes," the Democratic presidential contender said in an interview to be published in Friday's issue of Rolling Stone.
Growing up in the '70s, Obama said, he listened to the Rolling Stones, Elton John and Earth, Wind & Fire. Stevie Wonder is his musical hero from the era. The Stones' "Gimme Shelter" tops his favorites from the band.
The Illinois senator's playlist contains these musicians, along with about 30 songs from Dylan and the singer's "Blood on the Tracks" album. Jazz legends Miles Davis, John Coltrane and Charlie Parker are also in the mix.
"Actually, one of my favorites during the political season is 'Maggie's Farm,'" Obama said of one of Dylan's tracks. "It speaks to me as I listen to some of the political rhetoric."
In the song, Dylan sings about trying be himself, "but everybody wants you to be just like them."
Several musicians on Obama's iPod support his bid for the White House, including Bruce Springsteen. Earlier this month, Dylan told a British newspaper that he believes Obama is redefining politics in the United States and could deliver change to a nation in upheaval.
"I've got to say, having both Dylan and Bruce Springsteen say kind words about you is pretty remarkable," Obama said. "Those guys are icons."
Obama said he hasn't met Springsteen, but the two have talked over the phone.
"Not only do I love Bruce's music, but I just love him as a person," Obama said. "He is a guy who has never lost track of his roots, who knows who he is, who has never put on a front."
And did he address him as the Boss?
"You've got to," the candidate said.
Asked what he thought of rap, Obama said the genre has broken down barriers within the music world, though he's concerned about his daughters _ Malia, 9, and Sasha, 7 _ listening to it.
"I am troubled sometimes by the misogyny and materialism of a lot of rap lyrics," he said, "but I think the genius of the art form has shifted the culture and helped to desegregate music."

I believe the intentions and plans of this amazing candidate make an exciting time in USA politics.
Politics aside, he has the language and the eyes of a sensitive, well intentioned person.
we are the change we've been waiting for :)

Obama Speaking on Rap
I'd wish he would go into more detail about rap. If he becomes the next president he has the power to influence (1 would assume) the direction of rap's message and power in the media.
"I am troubled sometimes by the misogyny and materialism of a lot of rap lyrics," Misogyny is parallel to misandry — the hatred of men. Using that word when discussing rap was probably the best way to voice his non militant- non republican standpoint.
he said, "but I think the genius of the art form has shifted the culture and helped to desegregate music." He ends on this sentence talking about "the genius of the art form" but does not go further to discuss what that genius is.
Politics is all bullshit to me anyways. I'm always picking out the bad to understand if there is any good in their words

A really nice entry
I rather quote this line;
"Not only do I love Bruce's music, but I just love him as a person. He is a guy who has never lost track of his roots, who knows who he is, who has never put on a front."
Indeed, all I can say is it's confirmed by last night's his performance. Just coincidently, last night we went to Bruce Springsteen's concert in Paris !! The concert was terribly successful ! His non stop 2 and a half hours play, always giving himself entirely from the beginning to the end, has knocked out ,( I think), full audiences. Each musician of 'Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band' was Great! Through last night's all his songs and music, one thing we all have made sure is; he is a rooted man. I'm very impressed by seeing Bruce Springsteen's people gathering so affectionately, in Paris !
Eh, I also have, like many others, a hope and a dream towards the US in near future. Please realize it. H&B Clinton called on to support Obama, isn't it good, non?
Movie: Sunshine.
I just saw the movie sunshine, (ok I’m a few years behind it’s a 2007 production). I was moved by the music and swore it was Moby, I stared at the tiny screen credits just to prove myself, I was surprised to learn it was the music of someone else OMG. There’s a piece call “surface of the sun” by John Murphy my favorite piece, has anyone had the same experience, or am I the only one?
Moby if by any chance you’re reading this no offence to you, in fact it’s a compliment. I listen to every atom of music including your creations and this sounded like something you would of created. Music is a very powerful tool that can bring up emotions in people they never knew existed. It takes a rare talent to be able to create music that posses so much power and emotions..
Have fun this weekend, remember the alcohol cut of time in CA is 2am, so no wining. (No pun intended)
Still kicking myself.

contact question
Hi Moby,
I really appreciate your journal articles, but I appreciate your music even more. It's like journal articles + rhythm! I actually had a question for you, regarding some art I am trying to accomplish, and I didn't know if you had any contact info you could send? This was the only place I could think of to ask. Thanks!
Dylan, Hip hop
Hey Moby
I hope Dylan's influence doesn't extend to Obama doing fucking gas guzzling Escalade commercials like Dylan did. I can understand licensing your music for use in a commercial but to actually appear in an Escalade ad? Say it ain't so, Bob... So much for counter-cultural Dylan. I guess they must've given him a free Eskie. And oh yeah, I wonder where Obama stands on the important issues like Souljah Boy vs. Ice-T, haha.

I've alway enjoyed browsing
I've alway enjoyed browsing other peoples' music collections, but I must say, Obama's seems to be just as if not more diverse than mine. I really like that in a person; I knew there was another reason I supported him.
